SOCTOBERFEST UPDATE

I was really doing well with my first pair of socks, BLUE MOON FIBER ARTS yarn and SOCKS THAT ROCK pattern. Then, last week, I dropped and lost one of the double pointed needles .... who ever said that socks are an "easy project to carry around with you"? I am still rather clumsy with all the double pointeds. So, naturally, I had to order ANOTHER set of double pointeds, this time in other sizes as well, and I'm also going to try knitting a pair on 2 circulars. MEANWHILE, this sock is ON HOLD for now until the needles arive!!

Some problems with my blog

I am experiencing some problems with my blog. Computer troubles at home, at work, it's like the knitting, never ending!

WHAT HAPPENED?

I'm ready to PAY someone to fix it for me.

I made the screen wider but still have some "issues".

The links and groups on the far right used to be centered, now some are too far right......

Please be patient and check back again soon !!!

I'm working on it.....now back to the knitting...

Last night at my

Northcoast Knitting Guild

annual competition meeting, I entered my recently finished

HYPHEN - BOY Modular Felted Bag

in the "Accessories" category and I won

1st PLACE !!!

Everyone was raving about the design, colors and the unique quality of this pattern.

I used 1 1/2 skeins Cascade 220 (black and turquiose) and 3 skeins

of Noro Kureyon randomly mixed in.

It took me 2 months to knit this bag and the last thing I wanted to do was knit long I-cord handles. The leather handles I purchased from

HOMESTEAD HEIRLOOMS

at Stitches Midwest fit perfectly!!

December Knit for CHARITY - THE RED SCARF PROJECT

What is the Red Scarf Project?

The Red Scarf Project, a project of the Orphan.org, collects red scarves to send in Valentine's Day care packages to college students who have been raised in foster care.

These brave young people are going it on their own and trying to improve their lives and the community by attending college. The care packages are welcome tokens of encouragement to young people who otherwise receive little to no mail. Your scarf should be soft (any material), unisex design, and approximately 60 inches long by 5 to 8 inches wide.

Interlacements Beaded Scarf Finished wins 3rd Place

I have just finished the

Interlacements Beaded Scarf Kit by Judy Ditmore.

The pattern is by

Deanna's Vintage Styles

I met these two designers and learned how to make this scarf this past August at

Stitches Midwest.

The beads are pre-strung and there are instructions on how to get the beads onto the yarn.

It is made with one skein of handpainted yarn from Interlacements.

I especially enjoyed the unique Long Tail Cast On method --- bringing beads from both the tail and the right side --- to make the lovely loops of beads at the bottom.

The scarf is made in 2 equal pieces then put together with a

3 NEEDLE BIND OFF.

3 NEEDLE BIND OFF ( in addition to many other techniques ) here:

KNITTING AT KNOON

I had some trouble untangling the strands of beads at first and lost what could have been about 10 more rows of knitting to make the scarf longer. My 2 pieces didn't come out even and I had to rip out about 2 inches of one side.

I'm still pleased with the overall result and I would definately make this one again!!

HERE ARE THE ANSWERS TO MY SECRET PAL 9 QUESTIONNAIRE:

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? Anything NORO, wool for felted bags, bamboo.

What fibers do you absolutely *not* like? I don't like mohair and I can't wear Wool or mohair....too itchy.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? Tall plastic round containers.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? I learned as a child from my mother while she knit clothes for my Barbie dolls (which I still treasure) and afgans. I picked it up again a few years ago.

Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? Intermediate.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? Yes!

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.) Lavender, patchouli, eucalyptus, and bergamot.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? No, not really.

Favorite candy? M & M's, Reese's peanut butter cups

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Candle making, needle felting, kool aid dying. I used to do needlepoint and cross stitch.

Do you spin? No, but I have a drop spindle free sample from a fiber festival.

8. What kind of music do you like? Broadway musicals, music from the 70's, techno.

Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD) Yes.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Blue, purple, turquoise.

Any colors you just can't stand? Gray, yellow, tan.

10. What is your family situation? Divorced 10 years, single parent, 3 teenage daughters. One sister, healthy parents.

Do you have any pets? No pets and I'm allergic to cats and dogs !

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? Yes, I wear all of them except hats. I do NOT wear sweaters at all because I'm HOT all the time and they are itchy.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? Felted bags, scarves.

13. What are you knitting right now? Socks that Rock, Artyarns multidirectional scarf, Fiber Trends Clogs, Noro felted bag.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts? Yes, thank you.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Circular.

Bamboo, aluminum, plastic? Bamboo, but I'd like to try lantern moon and addi turbos.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? No.

17. How old is your oldest UFO? Berrocco blanket - 2 years old.

18. What is your favorite holiday? Passover, Thanksgiving, Chanukah

19. Is there anything that you collect? Salt and pepper shakers; my original Barbie, Ken & Skipper dolls, clothes and accessories; Madonna on magazine covers; buttons; refrigerator magnets, fish.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? ADDI Turbo needles, KOIGU, TREKKING sock yarn, Opal or Regia sock yarn that self patterns,

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn? Mobeius cast on, knitting socks on 1 long circular or 2 circulars, Intarsia.

22. Are you a sock knitter? I'm just now making my first pair called Socks that Rock from Blue Moon fiber arts.

What are your foot measurements? 9 inches long by 4 inches wide. Shoe size 8 1/2.

OCTOBER: Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month educates women about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. Mammography use has doubled, and breast cancer death rates have declined. Still, many women do not utilize mammography at regular intervals. Mammography is the best available method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. Breast cancer deaths could decline further if all women age 40 and older received mammograms at regular intervals.

I urge all women and their families to get the facts about mammography.

HYPHEN BOY MODULAR BAG PROGRESS

PROGRESS REPORT

I am doing 13 total tiers (one more to go!)

then on to the creative bottom.

I am making my purse with top handles only, NOT as a backpack, so I will not make

grommet holes on the last tier.

I love the colors and the Noro Kureyon goes a long way using this design.

I'm using 1 1/2 skeins Cascade 220 Black

1 1/2 skeins Cascade 220 Turquoise

3 skeins Noro Kureyon

Size 8 straight needles, I'm using circular for the bottom.

Thunderstorms dampen Stitch N Pitch

Severe thunderstorms and traffic at a total stand still kept me from going to the Cleveland Indians Stitch N Pitch night a few days ago.

Silly me for trying to make plans on a "school night". Naturally after I turned around and came home, the weather cleared up. So I sat on my couch, knitting, and watching some of the game.

I sadly missed the event, but here's a great picture of two knitting wannabes, trying their hand at our precious craft at Wednesday's Stitch 'n Pitch. (Ann & Louise's husbands) "Perhaps they'll "get it" one day!!"
